What boredom teaches children
“I’m bored.”
It’s a phrase that often prompts adults into action. We suggest a game, organise an activity or try to fill the silence before it has a chance to settle. Children, however, don’t always experience boredom in the same way.
At Rain Trees International Kindergarten in Holland Village, we’ve often watched a child wander into the garden announcing there’s “nothing to do”, only to become completely absorbed a few minutes later. A stick becomes a fishing rod. Leaves become ingredients for a café. Someone discovers a trail of ants and, before long, three other children have joined the investigation. None of it was planned. No adult suggested the game. It simply emerged because there was time and space for it to happen.
Why boredom isn’t always a bad thing
For many adults, boredom feels unproductive. For young children, it can simply be the pause between one idea and the next.
Principal Rohini Ramadas sees this every day.
“We often underestimate how capable children are of creating their own learning. If we rush to fill every quiet moment, we sometimes interrupt the very thinking we’re hoping to encourage. Given a little time, children nearly always surprise us.”
This philosophy is supported by research.
In The Power of Play: A Pediatric Role in Enhancing Development in Young Children, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics in September 2018 (and reaffirmed in January 2025), paediatricians concluded that child-led play helps develop executive function, creativity, self-regulation, problem-solving and social-emotional skills. The report also highlights that children benefit from opportunities to engage in unstructured, playful learning rather than constantly adult-directed activities.
In other words, play isn’t simply entertainment. It’s one of the ways young children learn how to think.
The value of not having every minute planned.
Modern childhood often looks very different from previous generations.
Children have busy diaries, enrichment classes, organised activities and, increasingly, digital entertainment waiting at the touch of a screen. While these experiences all have value, constantly filling every moment leaves little opportunity for children to discover what interests them when no one else is making the decisions.
That’s something our teachers recognise every day.
“Some of the most fascinating moments happen after the words ‘I’m bored’,” says Early Years Teacher [Teacher Name]. “There’s often a pause where nothing much seems to be happening. Then a child notices something, asks a question or has an idea, and suddenly they’re completely immersed. Those ideas belong to them because they weren’t given the answer.”
Why this matters for families in Singapore
For many expat families in Singapore, life can be wonderfully busy. Between work commitments, travel, enrichment programmes and making the most of everything the city has to offer, it’s easy to feel that children should always be doing something. We understand that feeling.
Many of our families have relocated from around the world and want to give their children every possible opportunity. Sometimes, however, one of the greatest opportunities is simply having time to explore.
Whether that’s creating imaginary worlds in our 35,000-square-foot garden, building with loose parts, observing insects or inventing games with friends, children are learning to make decisions, solve problems and follow their own curiosity.
Creating space for children’s ideas
This doesn’t mean adults step away completely. Our role as educators is to create an environment that sparks curiosity, ask thoughtful questions when they’re needed and know when to step back. Children need to feel secure enough to explore independently, knowing a trusted adult is nearby.
At Rain Trees, we believe some of the most meaningful learning isn’t always the easiest to measure.
A child balancing stones. Two friends negotiating how to build a den. Someone quietly watching a butterfly for several minutes. None of these moments comes with a worksheet or a perfect end result.
Yet they are full of observation, conversation, imagination and independent thinking.
As adults, we’re often tempted to judge a day by how much was packed into it. Children experience time rather differently. Sometimes what looks like a quiet moment is actually a child working something out for themselves – and that may be one of the most valuable parts of their day.
The teaching team is gentle, welcoming, reassuring and very competent. There is a real love for the profession and the children in this school.
The administrative team is charming, very welcoming, and keen to make you feel at home.
We have seen our daughter flourish from the age of 18months to 3 and a half years. She always went to school with enthusiasm and curiosity. We are leaving Singapore and consequently leaving the school with deep regret.
Raintrees will remain the best choice we have made for our youngest and we will miss each person of the team.
We are so fortunate to be part of a large community of families that has bought us many wonderful friendships. We love the welcoming smiles in the morning as we arrive for School and the energy you feel from the premises. The site is truly outstanding and there is nothing that compares to it in Singapore! A beautiful landed house, with the most amazing large garden for the children to be able to run freely around in. The Friday "splash play" outside is the highlight of the week! We are grateful for the opportunities to come into the School, whether it is to help run a cooking class, be a 'Mystery Reader" or attend family events.
It's a special place is so many ways and I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
More than the curriculum itself, we were keen to have our daughter go to a loving, attentive, inclusive and engaging school with lots of outdoor time. Rain Trees has more than met our criteria. It is a tight-knit, vibrant community where the parents feel as much a part of the school as the children. The school celebrates festivals from all over the world which has been one of the highlights for us and such a great way to introduce the little ones (and their parents!) to different cultures. Our daughter has been thriving here - we have a happy toddler always singing, telling stories, counting numbers and devising clever ways to convince us to take her to school on weekends as well! What has however made our experience at the school really special is seeing how lovingly and wholeheartedly our daughter has been embraced by everyone at Rain Trees. Every time we speak to the teachers we are surprised at just how attentive they have been to her personality traits and how well they understand and nurture our little girl.
The best thing about Rain Trees? Every morning we drop our daughter off at school, we are always left feeling that everyone at Rain Trees is just as delighted to get to spend time with her as she is to be at the school. As parents, this is such a precious thing to take with us. The ‘big’ school our daughter will move to when it is time, will have big shoes to fill. We could not recommend Rain Trees enough. It is the best start for a child, full of love and adventure and we are so glad to have found it for ours.

The grounds are bright with sunshine and always filled with laughter.
Going waaaaay beyond the necessary...This isn't a preschool or playgroup....this is education and love at its finest and I couldn't have asked for a better more wonderful environment.
The site is also fantastic with tons of space for them to run around and burn off energy, and plenty of space for creativity!
Finally, each teacher that I've come across at Rain Trees has had the same calm, caring and supportive qualities you would look for in a teacher of your tiny ones.
